ΠΕΡΙΓΡΑΦΗ

George Stubbs has in recent years attracted growing interest. Though primarily known, both during his lifetime and after his death in 1806, as a horse painter Stubbs was also an engraver, enamel painter, etcher, anatomical artist and scientist.

At the height of his fame Stubbs was paid more for his horse pictures than was, for example, Reynolds for his porttraits. Yet Stubbs himself regarded these pictures, superb though they are, only as a stage in his development as a creative artist.

A self-taught painter who, from obscurity in Liverpool, became one of the most intriguing artists of his time, Stubbs was always individual and realistic in his approach to art - often against the mainstream. He died in poverty and largely forgotten but re-appraisal of his work marks him as a major figure in 18th - century art.

This book is published to coincide with a major exhibition of Stubbs' work at the Tate Gallery in London.

Constance- Anne Parker is a practising painter and sculptor. She also lectures widely and is author of Mr.Stubbs The Horse Painter. A Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors, Miss Parker is Librarian to the Royal Academy of Arts.
